JANUARY 16-18, 2024. A group of Collegedale Academy students attended the yearly Prayer Conference in Camp Kulaqua, Florida. The conference included students from multiple high schools in the Southern Union.
The theme for this year was “Relentless.” During daily worship services, Southern Adventist University’s Engage Worship team led the students in song before Pastor Chad Bernard delivered his sermons. The theme song was “Always On Time” by Elevation Worship.
Prayer Conference attendees were randomly sorted into student-led “family groups” of about twelve people. Each group had two student leaders who planned what to cover during their regular meetings. Family groups served as an opportunity for students from different schools to branch out and make new friends.
Throughout the day, there was an array of activities for students to participate in. The gym was open for anyone who wanted to play sports, and in a nearby field, an inflatable volleyball court and soccer. The line for the go carts was always long. Camp Kulaqua even has a small zoo on the property that was open for students to explore. In the evening, students frolicked at a foam party and rode on hayrides. Students who wanted to try horseback riding or the Tower of Faith had to hurry to sign up at noon.
“I wish it was longer because I think some people…have a harder time connecting with random strangers about…struggles or like, just random things,” explains junior Katie Starr. “But…if you’re willing to open it up and…really get to know your group, then I think it can be a true eye-opening experience.”
Four CA students, Cassandra Gonzales, Isabella Hulsey, Andrew Poarch, and Ashley Herren, were baptized on Sabbath by Pastor Chris and Mr. Hodges. “I decided to get baptized because I’ve been wanting to get baptized for a little bit now…and I just felt like that time was the perfect time,” senior Cassandra Gonzales reflects.
“Whoever is considering it, just go for it. Just step out of your comfort zone and go!”
