There is no doubt that sports are a big part of CA life. This past October, two of Collegedale Academy’s own sports teams: Boy’s Soccer and Girl’s Volleyball, went off to participate in Union College’s yearly fall tournament, where they faced off against 13 other volleyball teams and 9 other soccer teams. Though the Girl’s volleyball team was hoping to come back with championship, they came in at third overall. Despite this, the team did great by not giving up and playing to the best of their
ability. A notable game to remember was the one played against Madison Academy. Earlier in the season, both CA’s and their girl’s volleyball teams faced up against each other. This led to a friendship and close bond between both teams, in which during the Union tournament, both teams were there supporting each other. Said coach Pardo, “As Coaches, we were very proud of our girls team and how hard they worked.” During their time in the tournament, both teams received various compliments from other schools on how well they played, their sportsmanship and their interactions not just with each other, but with other teams as well.
The Boys’s Soccer on the other hand, ended in fourth place overall. The team played really well on all of their games giving it their all. They showed great teamwork and agility as well as a great amount of growth. However, on the last game played a very notable event took place. The other team didn’t agree with some decisions made and lost their temper, taking it out on our team and on a team member in particular, this being the first time any event of the sort happens. Said Mr. Groft, “I was really proud of how our guys handled it. We stood up for each other but we also stepped in to deescalate the situation really quickly.” Our team never backed down and finished the game strongly, putting little importance to the event that had transpired. A great marker for great attitude and even better sportsmanship. This Union tournament was great overall, despite all that happened. It it great to see and hear that it was our team and our team members, who were kind, respectful and the ones who chose to be the bigger people. There are many more exciting event soon to come.
