November marked the beginning of the Collegedale Youth in Action basketball season.

Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams kicked off their season against a tough opponent from last season, Maryville Apostolic. The girls’ team jumped off to a flying start, pulling out a large lead in the first quarter and never looking back.

The boys, refusing to be shown up by the girls, also started of the game guns a-blazing, knocking down threes and shutting down the opposition with a stringent defense.

While Maryville put up a good fight, neither team was a match for CAYA’s high-powered offenses and ball-hawking defense.

November 5-6, 2016, was the annual CAYA Invitational Jamboree. This year, CAYA’s junior varsity and varsity teams, Madison Academy, and CAYA’s biggest rivals, Georgia Cumberland Academy, attended.

In the opening games, CAYA’s girls’ and guys’ varsity teams defeated their rivals, CAYA JV and Madison, respectively, in resounding victories.

At primetime, the CAYA varsity boys squared off against GCA. Our boys played sloppily in the first half, but after 16 minutes, they commanded a 48-30 lead.

In the end, CAYA defeated the GCA Jaguars and ended the night with 2 wins and zero losses.

The girls’ varsity team was also 2-0 and both JV teams had been handed 2 losses on opening night.

Early Sunday morning, the CAYA boys’ teams squared off for the last game before the championship. The scrappy JV boys’ team came out of the gate swinging, startling the varsity team.

By halftime, the tenacity of the JV team had kept the score at 26-20. The second half, however, was a different story. The varsity boys, slightly irritated at the closeness of the game, blew the game wide open, finishing with a final score of 72-48.

Both varsity teams had reached the 1st place game with both of our JV teams neatly lined up for last place. GCA put up less of a fight Sunday morning against the varsity boys, who successfully secured first place.

The girls’ championship game was a nail-biter. The game came down to the final minutes of the game, with CAYA girls eking out a narrow 1-point victory.

The final scores for the weekend:

Junior Varsity Boys: 0-4

Junior Varsity Girls: 0-4

Varsity Girls: 3-1

Varsity Boys: 4-0.
