Firm Foundation: a devotional
December 20, 2017
“When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.”
Proverbs 10:25 NLT
We have all probably heard of the term “fair-weather friend.” It refers to a friend who only sticks around when things are going well and disappears at the first sign of trouble. These types of friends are not trustworthy or dependable and are not people we typically want to keep close to us in the long run.
Just like there are fair-weather friends, there are also fair-weather Christians. It is easy to be a Christian when life is good and when everything seems to be going your way, but what about when that changes? What happens when the storms of life batter your world and you can’t seem to “feel” God anymore? In order to persevere through those storms, we need a firm foundation—one that can only be found in Jesus Christ. When we are rooted with a faith in Jesus, we can live assured of our salvation. Feelings come and go, but faith in Jesus is forever.
In Revelation 3:15-16, John writes to the church in Laodicea, telling them: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” As Jesus’ return becomes nearer and nearer, we will have to decide our foundation. Every lukewarm “fair-weather Christian” will be forced to show his or her true colors. We will no longer be able to be in the middle, not completely committed to one thing or the other. We will have to decide to either be all for Jesus, in or all out.
